((  sky full of stars   ))

Tessa found herself standing by a fountain in the middle of New Rome. The sun had set a while ago, so the cobblestone forum was bathed in the warm glow of the cast iron streetlights. There were a sprinkling of people around her, most of them paired up or with a group. The aimless chatter mixed with the gurgling of the fountain, surrounding her with white noise that let her escape into her own thoughts.

She wasn't sure why she was so nervous about this date- wait, not a date. It was probably just her general anxiety that left an uneasy feeling in the center of her chest. She didn't have a lot of time after her game, just enough to get cleaned up, do her hair, and put a little make up on. She had gotten one of her half sisters to help her with her hair so she could get her make up on at the same time.

Tessa had settled for a simple pink dress, another thing she had asked for her sister's help for. She didn't own a lot of semi-formal clothes, there was never the need for them. Still, she seemed appropriately dressed compared to the other people she saw entering the theater.

Tessa checked her phone again, she was still five minutes earlier than she was supposed to be.

Noah went to the Forum of New Rome, super nervous about what was going to happen. He had gotten his best dressed attire to wear: a tuexdo. It sounded crazy, but he wanted to impress her. He wish he had date advice- not-date advice, he means- to help him. Was he being too formal? Should he have arrived in a t-shirt and khaki shorts? Should he have put on a semi-formal outfit? These concerns rushed through his head as he stepped foot in. He looked around for Tessa, hoping she couldn't sense his fear or his nerves. Noah wanted so badly to have a good time, and he honestly didn't know why. He didn't know he even felt about Tessa, but he liked her enough to be devastated if she stopped being his friend, at the very least.

Noah approached her. He admired her for a second or two before speaking up. "Tessa, you look great. Uh, we better go..." he took out the tickets and handed her one. "I'm surprised you made it looking so beautiful. I mean," he blushed, "like, since you had a game to cheerlead at tonight and stuff. It's quite impressive that you even showed up, let alone..." he trailed off. He didn't want to come off creepy or desperate. Noah made his way towards the place the play was being performed at.

Tessa smiled when she saw Noah approching, thankfully just as dressed up as she was. "Hey, you look nice!" She said. Most guys she knew didn't own a tux. She had dated a football player her freshman year, and for spring formal his mom had to find a tux for him. He didn't even know that it was the dress code for the event. He was still a nice guy, though. That was beside the point though.

The theatre was performing Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf, by Edward Albee. Tessa remembered reading it in her American Literature class last year. It was a good play, and ahead of its time considering it was written in the 60s. Tessa had written an essay about the theme of truth and illusion that persisted among the play. She had also heard of a performance off broadway where the actors genuinely got more drunk as the play progressed. She had a feeling that this performance was going to be more classic.

Tessa laughed lightly at Noah's comments. "Yeah well the game ended up being pretty short. We got rained out in the third quarter. Apparently one of the tuba players in the marching band put his instrument down to go find a rain jacket, and when he came back his tuba was filled with rain water."

When they got inside Tessa wasn't suprised to see the lobby of the theater went with a more roman theme. Columns seemed to be everywhere, lining the room and the stairs that led up to the upper circles.

"Hey, thanks," he said, feeling a burning nervous sensation in his chest, something he never felt. No matter what the occasion was- a test, a CTF game, a hard question, nothing. But now, Noah felt it. He could feel his burning heart taking over his lungs and breathing. Noah wanted so badly to have Tessa...like him. He wanted her to like him in the romantic way. The sooner he admitted that to himself, the better off he was. She was the nicest human he ever met and very attractive, and he wanted her to feel the same way back, even though Noah knew deep down she never would.

Noah was excited to see this play, considering he had never actually seen it before. But the actors in New Rome were great, and the stage production crew always did a great job. Noah's attention was turned to her talking about what happened at the game. "Wow, that sucks. I feel bad for the kid playing tuba. No one likes the kid playing tuba in high school," he joked. "Then again, I can't imagine anyone like the technology nerd who sat in the back of the class 24/7." He sighed and walked into the building.

Noah had been here before, but each time he entered, he felt how impressed he was with the place all over again, like seeing it for the first time on rewind. Noah looked at Tessa. "We sit up at the top," he said. He hoped that wouldn't make a bad impression, that the tickets were on the cheaper side of things.

Tessa smiled at the tuba comment, "He's actually a pretty nice guy. His name is David. He's in my english class. As a joke he tried to play the tuba with water in it, but no sound came out. It was pretty funny. What I'm saying is, if people like David, people like you." She hoped her half-story would cheer him up a bit. It was always silly to assume that the tropes that persisted in cheesy teen movies were actually representative of real life. She almost added 'I like you' to the end of her story, but decided not to at the last minute. But just the thought of it sent her heart racing. Thankfully she was pretty good at hiding it.

Tessa nodded and walked up the marble steps running her hand across the railing as she ascended. When they walked into the upper circle, she could see the stage, where the curtain was up, but the lights were dimmed and nobody was on. On the stage was a backdrop of a living room. It was cute and simple, like something you'd see on I Love Lucy. There was a floral couch and coffee table on center stage, with two sofa chairs beside it. There was a portable bar off to the side, sitting in front of a large bookcase. Tessa already knew how those would come into play.

"Aw, that's nice," Noah said and blushed a little. "But the problem isn't really with people liking me, it's with me approaching people and actually giving them an opportunity to like me. I much prefer robots and my mind over people. People are mean and bully me. This isn't something I'd like to discuss, especially in front of you, Tessa. I want you to think I'm," he paused and made his voice go low-pitched, "manly." He mockingly flexed and laughed. "Most people just don't get me like you do. Most people just see me as that crazy robot dude or whatever."

Noah looked at the stage, studying the backdrop and the general design of the stage. He looked at Tessa. "So, have you seen this play before? I haven't," he added. Noah looked away. Looking at Tessa for too long have him funny feelings, feelings he didn't want to handle. He just wished he knew why Tessa made him feel this way, even more than the never-going-to-happen romance.

Tessa laughed, "Well those people are missing out." she gave him a sincere smile, only to be distracted by taking a playbill from one of the ushers that stood to the side, and started towards their seats. All in all they weren't terrible seats.
"Yeah off Broadway last year, that performance was less conventional though." She answered, taking a seat.

Noah smiled. "Thanks." He followed her to their seats, and sat down. The seats were actually much better than he thought they would be. He looked at her, and then the people surrounding them. Mostly adult Romans, a lot of NRU students, some teenagers like them. Noah could understand why most teenagers wouldn't appreciate a work of art like a play. He was glad he was with Tessa, who did.

"Oh, nice. Yeah, the Roman actors should not this one, at least, hopefully." He saw their arms close together and started contemplating whether at some point, he should try to hold her hand. It was much too risky, right? And, he didn't want to come off creepy. But, if he did hold her hand, then she might get that he likes her in a more than friendly way. Then again, she could then reject him, stop being his friend, and tell everyone about it.

After a few minutes of the play, Noah was more distracted on this decision than the play. Noah decided that at some point in life, he had to take a risk. But, then, what if his palms were too sweaty? How do you even hold a girl's hand? Noah thought about it for a minute. He slowly touched her hand, but then quickly backed away and pretended like nothing happened.
