PostSubject: Dummies Don't Hit Back   Sat Mar 18, 2017 3:32 pm

You'd think the arena would be a fun place, since you were allowed to use real weapons on real people in real combat. At least, Catherine had assumed it would a fun place. Yup. Never assume, they say--and with good reason.

The daughter of Lethe was completely and utterly bored.

There was only so much fun one could have when slashing at straw dummies. Sure, they were great for practicing moves on, but after a while it just got so utterly boring.

Other campers were also practicing in the arena, but Catherine didn't really know any of them. A couple were from her cabin so she at least knew who they were, but she hadn't really acquainted herself with anyone in her cabin. Or in the rest of the camp.

She'd joked around a bit with some, scared others with Link, and threatened to gut at least three of them open if they dare touch her first-edition copy of The Shining ever again (and she meant it), but she hadn't really made any friends so far. She told herself that it was fine; she had only been at the camp for around a week anyway. But there was a part of her that wondered if she was just a little too eccentric for some of these other demigods (even though it was a first-edition copy, and her reaction should've been completely understandable).

Catherine sighed in exasperation before beginning a move on one of the straw dummies that she knew she had practiced about a billion times in the last half-hour or so.

Rhyolo walked into the arena looking to train. He was wearing his custom red chb shirt with some old jeans and converses. He then walks up to a dummy and transforms his watch in to his katana. He hold it with one hand and begins to work. He slashes three times at the dummy from the front then rolls over too the back of the dummy. he then impales it and lifts it over his head and slams it down behind him.

Bored. She turned around to study the other trainees. Catherine saw the kid with the red shirt and the katana (Deadpool cosplayer?) and couldn't help but gawk at the guy's skill. How does one fight so animatedly with freakin' straw dummies?

Insane.

She wasn't aware of how long she was staring. When she finally did realize this, she cursed and turned her attention back to her own dummy. She hoped that guy hadn't caught her staring--enough of that! She needed to focus.

OOC: Short, I know. Sorry.

In the corner of his eye he saw a girl looking at him. he then walks over to her. She looked like she was his age. Rhyolo looked at her and said,"Hey, I couldn't help but help but notice you were staring at me back there."

Catherine about jumped out of her skin. Shitake! He had noticed her stalker-staring. Great! Just great. Now people were going to start thinking she was a creep or something--though she wondered how people couldn't not stare at the guy while he practiced. "Oh!" she replied, turning to face the (attractive) ninja demigod. "Sorry, didn't mean to be weird there--it's just, I've never seen such a skilled demigod before." He looked to be around her age, which just made him more intriguing. How could one be that good and that young?

"Oh, uh, well thanks." Rhyolo was getting kind of flustered. An Attractive girl had just said he was good at something. Wow, Dude you can't blow this. Say Some thing that isn't stupid. "So that's a nice sword you have there." Rhyolo then internally cringed.

Catherine was surprised that this guy wanted to talk to her. "Ya, I wanted one that was specifically like a Medieval broadsword--though this one's smaller, because otherwise it would be too heavy for me to lift comfortably. It's a hand-and-a-half, which means that I can wield it with either one hand or both--which is good, because I usually carry a shield," she explained. "My name's Catherine, by the way. A Lethe kid," she added.

"Pretty cool. I guess my katana is a hand-and-a-half. I kinda made it myself in the forge a while back." He then turned it into his watch. "Also nice to meet you Cathrine, I'm Rhyolo, Son of pyriphlegethon."

"Pyri--Pyriphele...." Ya, she gave up on saying that name. Well, giving up would make her appear stupid, so she gave it another go. "Pyri-phle-ge-thon," she managed to say at last. "That's pretty hard to pronounce."

"Yeah, most people can't pronounce his name. Even less can spell it. And even less know who he is. heck, Chiron had to take a solid minute to remember. But I just realized we both are river kids." Rhyolo internally cringed even more.

Catherine took a moment to consider this. "Ya....I guess Lethe is technically a river goddess. Eh, I'm still in Cabin #23. Weird....wonder if I should talk to Chiron about that." Catherine sort of zoned out--something she did often, perhaps it was a Lethe thing (Lethe was, after all, the goddess of the forgetfulness/oblivion river Lethe). Noticing that Rhyolo was still existing, she snapped back into reality. "You in #23? I think I've seen your face before," she asked.

"honestly im surprised you have. Honestly you can say I'm not much of a people person so i tend to be alone somewhere or under my covers where no one can really see me." Rhyolo then starts to fiddle with his rings.

Catherine shrugged. "Pretty normal--I mean, I tend to scare most kids away with Link. He's my spider. A tarantula, to be specific. He's not even an aggressive one at that--perfectly safe, but kids don't seem to think that." She examined her sword absentmindedly. "Hmm....you wouldn't mind showing me some of your moves, would you?" she asked suddenly, looking back up at him. "You looked like Bruce Lee with a Celestial bronze katana instead of nunchucks."

"Honestly, I could but they wouldn't do you any good. You see, you make your moved based on your personal abilities, power, and weapons. With your sword and shield my style would't work for you," Rhyolo explained.

Catherine took a moment to consider this. "Hmm....didn't think about that. I guess you're right." She looked at the watch on Rhyolo's hand. "Still pretty cool, though. I couldn't move like that even if I used the same fighting style," she commented matter-of-factly. She honestly thought that this guy could possibly be one of the best warriors she had ever encountered--which was saying a lot, since she meant almost all of her time at the arena.

"Honestly, I think the best way to develop your own style and moves are through experience. How about a spar? Hey, maybe I could help you in improving your technique."

"Really?" The daughter of Lethe practically beamed at the prospect of that. She was quite sure of the fact that sparring with Rhyolo could be nothing other than beneficially to her own skills and a ton of fun. She grinned widely, exposing two rows of straight teeth that had no doubt taken three years of braces to create. "Sounds great!"

"Ok, let's go." Rhyolo then stepped back. He then transformed his watch into is trusty katana. rhyolo then got into his stance and waited for Catherine to make the first move. Ok, now let's see what you got.

That was quick. Catherine appreciated that about a person. People who couldn't make up their minds about what they wanted were like nails on a chalkboard to the daughter of Lethe. Catherine had a huge mind palace (as Sherlock Holmes from BBC's Sherlock referred to the brain as) that was filled with a bunch of useless information she could never forget but was only able to try to block; the result was that she had a lot to think about all the time and tried to decide this and decide that as soon as possible in order to move onto the next subject. She was quite scatter-brained, and so she had to decide things very quickly in order to keep up with her crazy mind.

She grabbed her shield, which had been laying next to one of the dummies (like she went anywhere without her sword or her shield....what if she encountered an aggressive force while walking to the bathroom?), and strapped it onto her left forearm. Catherine took a moment to glance at Rhyolo's stance before lunging at him, bringing her sword down on the other's katana. The two weapons clanged together loudly several times in succession as each demigod swung at the other. Many thoughts raced through Catherine's mind--most of them irrelevant, but one was This is going to be interesting.

Rhyolo then jumps back he then transforms his katanna back and turns his rings into two sai. He then does an overhead strike with both. Perfect, she'll block the strike and then i'll go in the the sweeping kick ready to end this.

He switched his weapons. That was cool. Interesting. Unique.

Then he used both of them at once on her. All right--difficult then. She raised her shield up to connect with the two blades while simultaneously thrusting her sword at Rhyolo's unprotected torso; however, the force of the two blade connecting with her shield caused her to stumble, so she missed the son of Pyriphlegethon entirely and was now very exposed to an attack.

Now! I got you right where I want you! Rhyolo then uses a sweeping kick to knock her off her feet. At the same time, he changed back to his katana to knock away her shield.

She landed on her back with an oof. Ouch. No, she meant owwwww....

That had been extremely painful.

That still was extremely painful.

"That," she panted, "was painful. But also pretty awesome."

Rhyolo breathed hard for less than a second, then he steadied it almost instantly. He then offered his hand to help her up. "Sorry, and thanks I guess?"

Catherine grabbed his hand with a grin as he helped her to her feet. "No need to apologize. That was amazing. You probably were already predicting my moves. Gods, but you move fast!" she said, very impressed.
