Zosime stalked silently in the woods; not even a twig or a dead leaf crackled under her feet. Her silver bow--a silver arrow already notched--was clutched tightly in her hands. Her dark brow was furrowed in concentration.

This was bad, very bad.

Such a deadly monster--and so close to the camp of the Greek demigods.

She paused abruptly near a torn shrub. She ground her teeth as she knelt beside the bush. Completely trampled; there was no saving this. She whispered a quick prayer over the unfortunate nymph before examining the prints nearby.

Bear. Huge. Monstrous.

This was no ordinary bear, but Zosime's prey: Callisto, the former Hunter who had been turned into a bear for her adulterous act with Zeus.

Who was also extremely strong and dangerous.

And had killed one of the Hunters under Zosime's command.

This was more than an average Hunt. This was personal--not to mention that a monster being so close to the camp was extremely dangerous for the demigods living there. She knew that mortals were foolish and sometimes left the safety of the camp for odd reasons, making them the perfect targets for Callisto.

With one last regretful look towards the pitiful remains of what was no doubt once a beautiful nymph's home, she started her hunt once more.

An Exception C6xyjj11

The forest was silent. Claude like that. It was a good change from the usual loud and somewhat tense atmosphere within the camp. He liked coming out here, just to admire the trees and the various plant-life that decorated the forest floor, the birds seemed more lively here. A place where they could be free without the hustle and bustle of human society. He wished he could stay here forever, just enjoying his surrounding, perched on top of a log that had long since been covered with moss.

Whistling gently, filling the silent air with his rhythmic tune, he stared upwards with starry eyes as he took in the sight of the array of different birds that circled around. He had always had an affinity for animals of the winged and feathered variety, he wasn’t sure why, maybe it had something to do with his father? They did rely on his winds after all.

Feeling a light weight upon his right shoulder, Claude peered to the side, a gentle grin forming on his face at the small sparrow that had taken residence upon his shoulder. “Hey there girl,” He cooed softly, his finger rubbing lightly against her feathers. “Don’t you want to play with the other’s,” He inquired, motioning with his head towards the birds above. “ Go on Nina, don’t be shy.” However the little sparrow, simply remained perched on his shoulder, going as far as to turn away from him, chirping all the while.

Humming in response, he returned his gaze back towards the others. Nina had been a gift from his father, given to him when he first arrived at camp,  therefore she was special to him. When his father met his mother they had been bird-watching and a sparrow similar to Nina had perched onto her shoulder. Aeolus might be a little insane now, but at least he was a little more attentive towards his Demigod children, it was unfair that other other Gods just ignored their mortal children. They we’re missing out.

Hearing a branch snap, the blonde turned attention snapped to the side. “Hello?” He called out, standing up from the branch and carefully picking up Nina from his shoulder and allowing her to rest in the palm of his hands. Moving to the sound, and leaning slightly to the side he spoke once more. “Don’t be afraid, i’m harmless.”

The birds suddenly stopped chirping. Zosime frowned and brought her bow up and pulled the arrow back so that its feathers were touching her cheek. Something was out of place. Something wasn't right.

Distracted, she didn't stop herself from snapping a twig. She bit back the urge to curse; perhaps she hadn't given away her position yet. Then she heard the voice. "Hello? Don't be afraid, I'm harmless."

Male. Not Callisto.

She felt anger and disgust rise up in her. He--a male--dared to insult her by saying she was afraid of him?! Inexcusable! Like he would ever pose a threat to her, a Hunter of Artemis! It was perhaps her anger and indignation at such a simple phrase that caused her step out from behind a tree, her arrow pointing at the boy's chest. "State your name and business," Zosime practically snarled.

OOC: Yup. She totally takes it the wrong way.

First thing Claude noticed was that the birds, including Nina, stopped chirping. Causing the area to become deathly silent, he peered upwards and wondered what could have caused them to be so silent. They seemed frazzled, and skittish, did he do something wrong? Maybe he had been a bit too loud? When his gaze drifted downwards he blinked in response at the presence of the woman who had an arrow pressed to his chest, she must have been the one to snapped the branch.

“Hmm, could you lower your voice please?” He asked rather politely. “I think you might be scaring the birds.” He claimed, turning his attention back onto them. “ It’s not your fault though, they are shy creatures.” Nina flew up from his hands and perched herself on top of his head, causing Claude to chuckle. “Well, most of them are.”

Realizing that the woman had asked him for his name, he give her a bright smile. “I’m Claude,”  he raised his hand towards Nina, and pointed at her. “ This is Nina,” He introduce. His gaze becomes perplex when she asked him what his business was here. “ I always come here to watch the birds, plus Nina needs to get fresh air and space to fly around for a bit.”

His hand moved towards the arrow, and he gentle tapped the wooden length with his finger. “ What’s your name, Miss? Are you new around here, I haven’t seen you around camp before.”

OOC: Yes, Claude is more worried about the birds than the fact that someone has an arrow pointed to his chest. Lol

OOC: He's such a cinnamon roll. I love him so much already.

BIC:

Zosime hoped that her shock didn't appear on her face. What the....how in....birds?! And this man--this boy-- was seriously more concerned about them getting upset than he was about the silver arrow ready to pierce his heart at any moment. Strange. This....Claude was intriguing her. She lowered the arrow, though only because she was quite sure he was indeed harmless.

"I'm not a camper," she said, keeping her words level and her voice calm. "I'm Zosime, a Hunter of Artemis." She thought she heard something in the distance. She risked a look over her shoulder towards the direction of the sound. East. Not good. "What are you doing out here? It's not safe right now, you need to go back to the camp," she warned. Callisto was close, and she didn't want to have this boy around when the monster attacked; he'd be a sitting duck for the former Hunter. "The birds will be fine, I assure you," she added. "She doesn't want them. You, however, she would attack."

She heard the bone-chilling sound of the bear's roar, followed closely by the terrified croaks of the birds and the beating of wings that carried them away.

“A hunter of Artemis?” He inquired with the curiosity of a three year old. “ That so cool,”  He praised allowing a smile, with the intensity a ray of sunlight, to spread across his lips. Suddenly he frowned, realizing that she hadn’t given him her name. “But what’s your name, Miss Huntress? it must be something exotic right?”

The huntress seemed to be alerted to the presence of something off in the distance.” I like to bird-watch, and it nice to get away from the camp sometimes” Away from the eyes that looked at him as though he was less for not being like the rest of them. “I fit in more out here, in nature, plus papa always changes the directions of the wind if there’s danger nearby....” Unless he was overloaded with work from the Higher Gods.

When the birds fell away, Claude was startled, unfortunately so was Nina, and she flew into the depths of the forest. “Nina!” Claude called out, he looked back at the huntress. “Sorry miss, but I can’t leave Nina behind,” He explained, chasing after the small sparrow.

“Nina come back!”

Zosime assumed that he either hadn't heard her mention her name or he just thought it was some Greek term; either way, she inwardly cursed the incompetence of man. However, rather than correct him then and there, she decided to let him continued with....whatever he was saying. This boy Claude puzzled her.

So, his father was a god of winds. That made a lot of sense--at least, it did to Zosime; wind gods tended to be....more unusual than, say, a river god. They didn't really fit in with the other gods of nature, too erratic, she supposed. May explain his peculiarity, she mused.

And then the fool started running after his bird.

"Koprophage!" Zosime hissed in frustration. Why in Zeus's name did the boy have to go and run off like that? If he was deciding to go against the knowledge of Zosime, who was over two thousand years old, and not return to the camp, then he could at least stay near her so that she was certain of his location. That last thing she wanted at the moment was another one of Callisto's victim's blood on her hands.

Well, he was a male, so it wouldn't be as painful a burden to bear.

Still....

She couldn't just leave the troglodytai to die. Growling in frustration, she hurried after him. "Claude! Claude! Stop!" she hollered.

An Exception 54g1u110

“Nina come back!” He called back desperately as he tried to follow the small sparrow. Being a son of a wind god, he was quite agile and more grace than one might expect, he moved through the dense foliage with minimal effort, his feet barely making a sound as he navigated the forest floor.

His senses picked up the change in the wind direction. His father must have finally noticed, but Claude was far too determined to get Nina back that he ignored the warning and continue to dash through the forest. That bird was precious to him, not only because it was gift from his father but it was his friend. He cared about it’s health, he didn’t want her getting hurt.

Soon he found himself in a clearing, Nina having perched herself on one of the higher branch of a lone thick branch pine tree. Stopping before the tree he rested his hand on the trunk, as he looked up towards the bird. “Nina!” He called before using his wind powers to propel him onto one of the higher branches.

Climbing and jumping from branch to branch, with little care about the safety of his actions, he finally made it to the branch where Nina was seated. With perfect balance he slowly made his way to the bird, his hand stretched out towards her.

“Come on Nina, here girl,” he cooed, the bird looked at his hand for a moment before chirping and jumping onto the palm of his hand.

“That’s a good girl,” He cheered gentle rubbing the top of her head with his index finger. “ Don’t run off like that, you almost gave me a heart attack.”

He heard the huntress voice calling out for him. “Over here!” He yelled, the wind literally carrying the sound of his voice to her. “We better get down-” Suddenly the tree rocked and Claude stumbled slightly, but managed to remain safely on the branch.

Looking down, he saw a rather larger and dangerous look creature, one reminiscent of a bear shaking the very foundation of the tree. “Hey, stop that!” He demanded, gripping onto the a nearby branch with his free hand to stop himself from falling off.

OOC: The severity of the situation has gone over his head imo.

OOC: Claude's immediate reaction to Callisto trying to kill him: "Hey, stop that!" Love it so much.

BIC:

Claude could apparently move much faster than any normal bumbling male demigod. Had Zosime been lacking in experience in the Hunt, she would've fallen behind immediately; however, due to her age and experience, she succeeded in only being about fifty yards behind the boy when he launched himself into a tree.

Hmm....it had been a while since Zosime had encountered a child of the wind god who did that so comfortably. She made a mental note to get out more.

His voice, amplified somehow by the very air itself, carried over to her ears, alerting her of his presence. Was he seriously so worried about a simply bird that--

A flash of brown slammed into the tree that Claude was currently occupying. Zosime felt her breath catch in her throat. Callisto.

She was even bigger than the last time the Hunter had encountered her: her fur was thick, like a layer of Greek armor, and darkened by the blood of her many victims; her claws were nearly eight inches long and razor-sharp, looking like they could easily slash through flesh as if it were made of butter; her snout was long, her muzzled reddened, with wicked yellow teeth. Callisto was about the size of a rhinoceros had the strength of ten times that of the average male grizzly bear.

In other words, the monster would knock down that tree and make mincemeat of Claude in no time.

Zosime couldn't let any more blood be split due to her incompetence. She should've killed Callisto centuries ago.

Without hesitating, Zosime pulled back her silver arrow, took a moment to take in a deep breath, and aimed at the spot near Callisto's back where the head and neck connected. She released the breath and the arrow at the same time. She didn't bother watching the silver streak connect with its target, instead already notching another arrow and firing it into the monster's flank. "Get away from there!" she screamed at Claude as Callisto roared and turned her attention away from him and towards the Hunter. She prayed to the Lady Artemis that the boy would somehow get away safely; he may be peculiar, but Zosime could tell that he had a better heart than most men.

Callisto let out an unearthly ululation and charged at Zosime.

An Exception 54g1u110

Claude watched as the beast turned its attention away from him and towards his new acquaintance. When the huntress told him to get away from the tree, he looked over towards her with worried eyes. He didn’t know what that thing was, but it wasn’t pleasant, it had a horrible aura around it and he could feel Nina shaking in his grasp. There was no way he was going to leave her alone to face it, that would be a horrible thing for him to do.

Leaping from branch to branch, the son of Aeolus quickly made his way towards the bottom of the tree. Nina flying up to rest on the top of his head as he feet hit the soil below. As the Beast charged the woman, Claude quickly looked around for something, anything he could use to gain its attention.

His eyes soon landed on a piece of bark, which he picked up, and threw at the beast’s back. The massive bear halted and turned around to snarl at him, leaving it open for Zoe to strike it with an arrow as it’s attention was now solely on the male demi-god before it.

“Um… could you not hurt my friend please?” He tried reasoning, he only had an affinity for birds but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t try to at least calm down the creature. His hand raise in a non-threatening manner. “I don’t want to hurt you,”

However the beast was not to be reason with as it charged at him. He barely managed to move out of the way in time, using the wind to propel himself out of the beast line of direction and watching as it slam into the trunk of the Tree. Said tree didn’t even stand a chance, came tumbling down.

Landing on his back the blonde stared up at the beast as it approached him slowly, menacingly, swallowing anxiously he moved pushed himself backward in an attempt to keep significant distance between him and the bear.

This wasn't going well at all.

And it was all this boy's fault. Typical males.

Well, at least he's trying to fix it, she thought to herself as she summoned her Celestial bronze xiphos (where it comes from is Hunter business). While she wasn't close to the she-bear at the moment, she wanted to be prepared for what she did next.

Zosime notched another arrow, drew the string back, and released it, her eyes following the silver streak until it sank into Callisto's shoulder blade with a sickening thud. The monster roared in agony and whipped around to face her, bloodshot eyes burning with hate and murderous rage. Not wasting a breath, Zosime fired another arrow into Callisto's now-exposed chest and rushed at the stunned bear. As she neared it, she lashed out with her blade. She caught Callisto near the bottom of the bear's vulnerable underbelly and jumped out of the way before the creature could recover. Her bow was now in her left hand and her sword was in her right. Without taking her eyes off of the giant bear, she addressed Claude. "If you have any offensive powers, boy, now would be the time to use them," she called out before notching another arrow and drawing it back, her sword still in her hand as she did so. The arrow met its target, but the Hunter was beginning to run out of arrows.

Growling with frustration, Zosime tossed her bow to the side and gripped her sword's handle with both hands, planning her next move and hoping that Claude would hopefully come up with something that could possibly aid her.

An Exception 54g1u110

He hesitated.

The feeling of crippling anxiousness hitting him like a way as the huntress asked for his aide. Something in which he was unsure he was able to provide. He was, for all intents and purposes, a pacifist. He had the natural greek demigod vigilance, but he was untrained in the art of battle, he only used his abilities to entertain himself, never in real combat.

As the beast turned towards him and the niece of Artemis, he realized that now was better time than ever to start using his abilities in an offensive manner. Gulping he turned towards the huntress. “But… what if I accidentally kill it?” Sure it attacked them, but it was an animal. It didn’t know any better.

He hesitated and froze completely as the beast growled ferociously at the two of them. His face becoming pale, and he took a visible step backwards. The only thing keeping him from outright fleeing was the fact that the huntress at his side was counting on him and that Nina was chirping anxiously at the top of his head.

Still he was, for the most part, rooted in place as the beast charged with the speed and the force to run the both of them over. His mind was running a mile a minute, his pulse quickened and as the beast neared, his innate survival instinct kicked in. “Calm down!” He shouted, a blast of intense and destructive air burst from his lungs, causing the ground to ripple and the air around to react violently, blowing an intense breeze that almost sent Nina flying off the top of Claude’s head.

The air blast made direct contact with Callisto and sent the creature flying, slamming into the bark of several trees before it’s body came to a complete stop. Dazed for a period, but not dead.

Claude’s eyelids felt heavy as he felt all the energy in his body seemingly drain away. The blonde demi-god falling off balance, before crashing to the ground. Passing out from exhaustion. Nina flew from his before he hit the ground, circling around the demigod briefly, before flying over to Zoe and perching herself on the female demi-god’s head.

She had almost wanted to roll her eyes when the male demigod voiced his fears of killing Callisto. The boy, she could see it in his eyes, was a peaceful soul; perhaps it had been too much to ask Claude for help. Most wind gods were hardly the vicious type anyways.

And then the boy blasted Callisto into a tree about a hundred feet away.

She couldn't help but gasp. That was extremely impressive. Few children of wind gods she had encountered before were powerful enough to do that without the proper training or practice.

Of course, then Claude collapsed with exhaustion, which was never a good sign.

However, at the moment Zosime didn't have the time to check and see if Claude was all right; first, she had to send Callisto back to Tartarus. The she-bear was still stunned from the boy's powerful attack, giving the Hunter a perfect opportunity to end this. She quickly ran over--practically glided--towards the bear (at this point that strange little bird had flown off her head), her sword gripped tightly in her hand. Only when she was close enough to smell the creature's breath did she slam the blade into Callisto's skull, burying it in their as deep as possible.

The former servant of Lady Artemis let out one terrible gasp before growing motionless.

Zosime pulled out her sword from the bear's skull. Dark blood cascaded off the edges of the blade rapidly and fell onto the forest floor. The daughter of Apollo buried the sword into the earth and knelt in front of Callisto's fresh corpse. She muttered a quick phrase in Ancient Greek--perhaps a prayer, perhaps an apology, perhaps something entirely unrelated to either. She then pulled her sword out of the dirt, the blade now cleansed of the monster's blood. She dismissed it and it vanished from her hands.

Now, to attend to Claude. She quickly hurried back over towards the boy's fallen form; since no one other than the gods and Nina the bird could see her, she allowed her concern to show forth on her face. The demigod had used up a lot of his strength to create a blast of wind that strong and had overexerted himself. Zosime had dealt with similar situations before. She summoned her white backpack seemingly out of thin air, zipped it open, and dug around the contents inside. After several seconds, her hand reappeared with a bag of ambrosia. She dug around for a few more seconds and came back up with a small vial of clear liquid.

Zosime pulled the cork off the vial and held it under Claude's nose. He'd wake up in a few minutes, but she knew that he would be extremely weak and probably in pain. All she could do at the moment was wait until his consciousness returned.

An Exception 54g1u110

The few moments that Claude had been unconscious seemed almost agonizing as the young blonde didn’t steer or even looked as though he was reacting to the scent of the vial that was held beneath his nose. His eyes fluttered opened and he took in a deep, audible breathe, as he tried to regain his bearings to little success. The world around him was a giant blur, and the figure who sat near holding a strange bottle close to his nose was unrecognizable.

“Who are you?” He groaned groggily, his eyes blinking feverishly to get rid of the haziness. He tried to sit up but was forced down by an intense pain that rippled against his muscles, as if threatening to tear them to part if he didn’t cease his movement. “Ah!” he winced, biting down gently on his lower lip to prevent himself from yelping at the pain.

He was becoming frantic, he didn’t know what was happening right now. He couldn’t remember what had happened for him to be in such a state. His brain was too tired and had yet to recover from the overload of energy the young man had used in his attack against Callisto.

“Where am I?” He tried keep his voice even and his tone calm, but it all came out as a frantic and genuinely confused messed. He wanted to believe that he wasn’t in any immediate danger, but he was far too uncomfortable to be able to fully accept that.

Suddenly, as his brain began to regain itself, a new worry rosed. “Where’s Nina?

The Hunter felt a stab of--no, that couldn't be sympathy. No way. Nope. Not for this boy. Never.

Then he asked about his bird. Then Zosime's heart totally melted.

This demigod--this boy had just woken up confused, weak, hurting, etc., and all he wanted to know what where his bird was. Strange. Mortals didn't normally have that great of an attachment that they would focus all of their attention on finding an animal rather than helping themselves. Claude had obviously created some kind of personal attachment to the bird.

"You're in the woods," she said, "I'm Zosime, a Hunter of Artemis--though you didn't really catch that the first time. You just helped me kill a very big and very dangerous monster, which is why you're extremely weak right now. Nina's up in that tree." As she spoke that last statement, the bird flew down and perched on Zosime's head. Oh well. As long as she (apparently the bird was a female, according to Claude) didn't do her business in Zosime's hair, the Hunter was fine with the bird remaining.

Claude tried to get up but Zosime gently nudged him back down, shaking her head. "Stay," she ordered, poking his chest. She then got out a cube of ambrosia and offered it to Claude. "Eat this," she said.

An Exception 54g1u110

When Claude’s gaze finally returned to him and he got a good look at the face of the person he was communicating with. He was struck with the familiarity of it, and now that he had a name and title he was pretty certain that she had a hand in helping him in that rather odd situation. “Oh,” he said solemnly after the woman revealed that he helped to kill the creature from earlier. “ I don’t…. I don’t remember doing anything like that.” He had never used his powers in an offensive manner before, only for his entertainment, so he never knew how destructive his powers were or how powerful he potentially was. “ You killed her right? I…” he paused, the idea of him killing something sentient didn’t quite sit well with him. “I didn’t…” he couldn’t even bring himself to say the words. He just hoped that she understood what he was referring too.

When Nina appeared on top of Zosime's head, Claude visibly relaxed and even went as far as to let out a sigh of relief despite the pain that it caused him. The bird nuzzled into the woman’s hair, finding it a rather comfortable spot. “ Sorry, she must have been scared when that bear came. She doesn’t usually fly off like that.” That had been worrying.

When Zosime offered him the ambrosia Claude winced and shook his head rin refusal. “No, no i’m good….” he said, with much pain pushing the ambrosia away from him. “I don’t need that, I promise.”

Zosime nodded in response to his question about killing Callisto. She was actually surprised at his concern for his own role in the monster's death. To Zosime, it was quite simple: Callisto had already killed several other demigods--including a fellow Hunter--and would no doubt have killed more if the daughter of Apollo had not been there to send she-bear back to Tartarus.

Then the foolish boy decided that he was going to reject ambrosia.

Bad move.

"Claude, if you don't eat this right now I will force your mouth open and cram this down your throat," Zosime warned, offering the ambrosia once more with a very convincing mom-look. "Oh, and I've done this before, just forewarning you," she added, her voice serious and flat. There was no way this kid was about to move without replenishing himself. Children these days....they had to be told to do everything.

Had you not been a Hunter, you would be around the same age, she told herself. Eh. She would've been mature enough to eat the ambrosia herself, anyways. Zosime sighed and made forward, as if she were about to reach towards Claude's face to act on her promise.

An Exception 54g1u110

“But I don’t want it,” The blonde whined in response, squirming slightly at the threat. He honestly didn’t enjoy the taste of Ambrosia, it was rather odd to him, it was supposed to take the form of the eater’s favourite food but Claude didn’t have a favourite type of food so it ended up tasting bland.

When it looked like the other demi-god was going to follow through with her threat, Claude pouted and turned his head away from the food. “No, Zoe it tastes weird.” He proclaimed in defiance.

He didn’t want to be difficult, but he really didn’t want the ambrosia, he would much rather wait for his energy to return naturally and his body to heal by other means, any means, which didn’t involve eating ambrosia.

Zosime sighed. "Fine, but if you die of an aneurysm you won't get any pity from me," she grumbled, stuffing the ambrosia back in her bag. There was no point in arguing with the demigod; he had already decided that he wasn't going to willingly eat it and the only other alternative would be to physical force the boy's mouth open and shove it down his throat. Zosime did not look forward to doing that; she had done that twice before, and both times had been quite....unpleasant and disgusting experiences.

It then occurred to her that Claude had called her "Zoe." Her brow furrowed; what was that supposed to mean? The gears in her mind worked furiously....boys called girls names, but "Zoe" wasn't particularly offensive so it couldn't be that....maybe he'd misheard her (again), but she was quite certain that Claude had understood her....

Wait--what was that one thingy called? A "nickname?"

Oh....that was it. The boy had given her a nickname. Odd. People didn't really give her nicknames--especially boys....though, in their defensive, it was hardly ever welcomed on her part. Claude was just becoming stranger and stranger to the Hunter.

"You still need to stay down and rest for a little bit," Zosime said, her commanding motherly tone returning. "You wouldn't want to overexert yourself."

Claude relaxed somewhat when he saw the huntress put away the ambrosia, even going as far as the grin in response although the grin soon turned into a grimace when he accidentally moved a little too much. Nodding in response, he relented to Zoisme’s demand about him resting. Peering upwards to the demi-god he gave he stared curiously, searchingly, up at her.

“ How old are you Zoe?” He inquired thoughtfully. “You seemed really confident when you we’re fighting that thing, you must be really experience?” He wondered if he could ever be as confident as her in that situation. He wondered if he would even want to be, killing things went against his nature but he knew, deep down, that being a Greek Demi-god meant that he didn’t get the luxury to avoid such a thing forever.

“Can you teach me how to use a bow?” He inquired of her, raising his hand upwards. He had been very impressed by her usage of the weapon, even as briefly as it was. “You looked really cool when you we’re using it.”

Zosime blinked in surprise about Claude's inquiry of her age. She had been around 17 when she'd made her vows and joined the Hunt, but that had been over two thousand years ago. However, she always remembered her exact age. "I'll be turning 2,380 in a few months," she informed him, though she was looking over at Callisto's corpse and missed the boy's reaction, if there was any. "I've been in the Hunt since I was a teenager, so I've fought monsters like this before--though only a few times with a male," she added. It truly was rare. The last time had been over three hundred years before. He had been a Spaniard, and young. He had helped her kill a drakon. He had fallen in love with her.

She bit her lower lip at the thought of him. That was the past. She needed to forget those times.

Claude's second question brought her back into reality. "Well, if you have the patience and the sense so as not to get yourself killed, I guess I could give you a few tips. I don't have to leave immediately to report back to the others," she replied, surprised at her own words. It had been so long....

An Exception 54g1u110

“Wow,” Claude said, momentarily stunned by how old Zosime claimed to be, but then his mind fluttered to his own father, Aeolus, who was the God of the Winds and the spectacularity of Zosime’s age seemed to fade somewhat. “I guess you're still kind of young in a sense, my dad’s probably older,” He sniffed, rocking his head gently from side to side.

“That seems odd… do you not like working with men?” Claude suddenly pointed out, his eyes focused intently on Zosime. “Why does it matter what gender I am anyway?” It didn’t particularly make sense to him that Zosime had some reservations against him for being male. That was something that he could have possible control and, if given the option, he wouldn’t change it anyway. He liked who he was.

“Sweet-sauce,” He beamed brightly, wincing slightly as he sat up. “ There’s a shooting range back at camp if you want to head there? Or we could just practice out here right? Shouldn’t make much of a difference right?”

Claude's reaction to her age was pretty tame, actually. Zosime had met people who had literally flipped out on her and others who had just shrugged and said "So it goes." At least he wasn't gawking, and besides, he was right: compared to the gods, she was merely a child.

As for the subject of men.... "I'm not sure if you know this already, but Hunters are sworn to never be with a man," she explained. "We take an oath to maintain our maidenhood and serve Artemis, and in exchange we live forever unless we're killed. Sort of like the Elves from the Lord of the Rings books." She sighed. "We--I, especially--try to avoid men so as not to fall into....temptation, if you know what I mean. No falling in love, no one-night stands....if we're not around you boys, then we won't even think of such things." She decided against telling him her own vendetta against most men; after all, he was very different from most males she had ever met.

At the mention of entering the camp, the visibly shuddered. "I....don't like going into the places of demigods," Zosime said quickly, standing up abruptly as she did so. "There are many boys there....not to mention distant relatives of mine. It seems as though I always have at least one sibling who hates me for practically disowning my father." She looked around at her surroundings. "The woods is a sufficient place--though we'll probably have to meet up at another time. You still need rest."

“That seems convoluted,” The blonde remark with a small frown on his face, scratching his left cheek with his index finger. “I guess you did take an oath, but what’s that got to do with disliking dudes? Just because you find a guy attractive doesn’t mean you have to act on those feelings or feel ashamed of them. I mean, if you didn’t even have any feelings for other people what makes you any different from a machine? “ His brain was trying to find reason and logic around the huntress’ words but it seemed impossible, because to him the entire concept of segregated yourself from any group of people just because they were different or because they had different features was rather poor of taste.

“Does that mean you won’t hang out with me then?” He inquired solemnly,  a frown upon his lips as he stared at the huntress of Artemis with expectant eyes. “After all, I'm a boy too.”

He glanced over briefly towards the Camp. “I guess that’s fair then,” He sighed, he didn’t really care where they did it but it would have been nice to show Zoe around camp. “ I should probably get back soon by the way, It’s getting a little late and there’s probably more monsters lurking around here somewhere.”

"We're different from machines because we choose this life," Zosime couldn't help but sigh. She had explained this to literally hundreds of people in her lifetime, and many of them had been confused. You either understood it the first time or you would struggle with it for the rest of your life. "We chose to maintain our maidenhood, and when one of our girls is attracted to a male, it threatens that. It takes much self-control--not to mention that it's harder for some more so than for others. Like for me, I've been alive so long that I just avoid most males out of tradition rather than fear of me being attracted to them, or vice versa." She winced slightly at the Latin term, hating the fact that such a phrase had crept into her daily vocabulary. Still some prejudice there, she could see.

"Well....we try to avoid most boys," Zosime offered, trying to explain such a complicated matter to Claude. He seemed so....well, ignorant of the way of nature. "Some have been....threatening. Aggressive. However, there have been many exceptions in the past, such as when our former lieutenant and our current lieutenant went on a quest with a male demigod--a rather famous one, I think, named Percy Jackson. Since Thalia's ascension, such old traditions have been sort of cast away in favor of a more--a more lenient approach. In the past century or so, the Hunters have become so involved in the world of the mortals and the demigods that it is nearly impossible to completely avoid every male. If you tried to make advances towards me--then no, we wouldn't be able to 'hang out,' as you put it. However, since you don't seem to be that type, it is permissible." She hoped that she had been able to make it clear to Claude. He was unusual; that much was clear. In all honesty, his peculiarity made him intriguing to Zosime. Were many other males like this? If so, how could she have been so blind in the past? Was it possible that some of the Hunters' most sacred ideals had been wrong this entire time?

She nodded in understanding. "Callisto is powerful enough to scare away some of the more minor ones," she said, "but they'll be back once they realize that she's dead. These woods are far too close to the camp for monsters to stay away for long--after all, there's always a chance that they might ensnare some unlucky demigod, the same way Callisto would've gotten you." She offered him her hand. He may be bigger than her, but Zosime knew that she could help him to his feet without a problem.
