A Street Without Joy (open) Empty

The sun slowly set on this cursed day, Karla watched it set through the boarded up windows of  an abandoned gas station. To say it had been a difficult afternoon would be a drastic understatement. The daughter of Athena's left arm stung fiercely, the bandage already stained red with blood.
A group of demigods travelling to Camp Jupiter from the safety of Camp Half-blood had been attacked on the road, midway between the two camps. The ambush was a masterful strategy, if Karla had to admit it. Though she supposed it was just a extreme run of bad luck too.
It was inevitable that eventually a ambush would occur on one of the groups. This one, had been severe to say the least.

The lead SUV had been disabled by a thrown or launched boulder and thus blocked the road, the rear SUV was blocked by a fallen tree. Thus trapping the coach and demigods. Many demigods fell in the initial chaotic clash, Karla found herself in command or assumed it, either or really she supposed now. The red haired girl led the demigods in a break out attempt, it succeeded. Just.
Hounded by monsters all the way, the survivors discovered an abandoned gas station, which under Karla's guidance was rapidly fortified as best it could be, thus making it ready to resist any more attacks. These attacks were swift coming, the monsters attacked relentlessly, at least two or three assaults an hour. Yet they stopped nearer the sunset, no doubt preparing for a night assault.

Virtually every demigod was wounded, few possessed armour herself included, there was a shortage of weapons, little ammunition left for the missile weapons, no medical supplies and little food. There was fortunately, plenty of fresh water.
A Roman had used his mobile to call for assistance from their new location, another Greek managed to send an Iris message. Help however would be long coming, too long Karla predicted to herself. The red hair girl doubted that they would be alive to see them arrive. There was the possibility however of other survivors arriving to provided desperately needed reinforcements.

Karla's sword hung in her scabbard, it's weight reassuring. A glance behind her, revealed the other demigods resting as best they could. The multitude of wounded were sleeping, or otherwise were made comfortable. Like herself, there were a few keeping watch for the inevitable attack from the monsters.
Siege battles were Karla's expertise, but even she knew that they would lose this fight. Might as well make the monsters pay for it heavily.

"Hello." A light feminine voice sounded behind the red headed female.

It was Alysra, Nathen's female pseudo dragon. Her shiny green scales were splattered with blood on her back side, where there was a deep scratch, it was nothing too bad, but it the upper most parts of her muscles, if she were to fly of flap her wings, it might worsen to injury. It was best not to risk it.

Alysra was draped across Nathen's thin shoulders, the 13-year-old boy was very thin for his age at least, when compared to everyone else around him. Though despite his thin stature, he had small wiry muscles from the little time he has spent at Camp Half-Blood. Chiron sent him to Camp Jupiter to expose him a bit to the Roman culture, it was supposed to be a field trip, not a test in siege type of battle.

Nathen's orange Camp Half-Blood tee shirt was stained with blood and torn across the chest, under it his chest was wrapped in bandages. He had a cracked rib and his chest area was covered in claw marks. "How can we help?" Nathen was the one that spoke this time.

Karla turned at the sound of a quiet voice, for the moment a flicker of surprise showed on the young girl's face but it soon vanished. Dragons were something or rather tended to be someone she rarely spoke to. Not because she possessed a dislike of dragons, rather... Karla simply disliked speaking to anyone.
It helped to prevent bonds being formed before they all inevitably died. Better to be alone, than be alone in grief.

There were exceptions to her usually dislike of communicating, such as in times of crisis or battle. Karla, a self proclaimed master of siege might be able to hold this place for a day or two. Might. They needed help, they needed a better strategy than merely hold on.
But, the demigods were too few in numbers to make an effective breakout, too few in numbers to best the enemy in an open battle as well. It might be days till help came from either camp, if nothing delayed their arrival.

For a few heartbeats, Karla considered the possibility of using the dragon to spy on the enemy. But she knew little about dragon night vision capabilities. Demigods made for poor spies as to monsters they possessed a certain delicious smell.
She realised that she had been lost in thought, considering options and still had yet to speak. "Hello." The daughter of Athena said to them both, her voice calm and collected. Almost as if she knew that the situation would soon be resolved with the arrival of aid.

"Forgive my ignorance in these matters but how well do dragons see in the dark?" She asked somewhat tentatively as if concerned by causing offence. Karla risked a glance outside, the inky darkness greeted her, the shadows seeming to shift and move, conjuring up phantom horrors.
Once, long ago she might of considered there to be no danger in the dark, no monsters hiding in the deepest shadows.
How wrong she had been. Now there were definitely monsters out there. Yet... Where happened to be the most important question.

"We need a plan to get out of this mess." She whispered softly so no one else but the three of them could easily hear it.

"Dragons see far better in the dark than owls, we actually have far better senses than most other animals," Alysra said in reply. "We also came here to request something of you, Nathen here needs a great amount of organic material. We need it for something that could swing this situation in our favor."
Nathen shifted a little when she said that, he thought he should tell her his little secret. "I can talk to monsters, and I can summon them from Tartarus." He whispered as he trailed off at the end. "Can that help at all?"

"Can you see anything?" Karla immediately asked, before listening to the rest of what the dragon had to say. A thin smile crossed her face. The thought of launching some manner of counter attack, a sally pleased her greatly.
Almost beyond reason actually. It gave her an opportunity. No. It gave her hope. Karla's mind raced, conjuring up all manner of potential battle strategies. They would win. They had too.

"Yes that can help greatly." She replied quickly. But then paused. "What kind of organic material?" The child of Athena asked quietly, uncertain by what they needed in order to summon  a monster. Karla may of disliked the idea of summoning a monster, but what choice did they have?
To do nothing was to die. No, it was to let everyone else die as well as herself.
She could not afford to lose anyone else. Too many people had die already.

"I'll go see what I can see," Alysra said as she jumped from Nathen's shoulder to the window. "It looks like their patrolling outside, maybe looking for a way in, or maybe guarding the place and waiting for something," Alysra reported.
"Anything that I can make a magic circle with," Nathen replied, a bit rather slowly, "We could use anything organic, wood, leather, leaves, as long as I can make a magic circle thing with it." Nathen looked around, what he saw was that the most abundant organic material that they had on hand at the moment was spilled blood, he'd rather not use blood, but it might have to be used.

Karla watched the dragon for a moment. "Hmm can you give me any ideas of their numbers?" She inquired, eager now to carry out a plan to fight back against the monsters.
The Daughter of Athena turned to face the demigod. "We will need to assemble the others." She turned away once more, walking towards the other god spawn. "If you can fight. Set your boots on the line. We have a plan."

She looked at him, nodding for him to tell them the plan.
